(Web) Surfing on Pismo Beach Without Even Getting Wet

PISMO BEACH, CA August 25, 2003 -- Wireless Internet Hot Spots are HAUTE! While you are packing your bags for a day at the beach this summer, besides your beach towel, sunscreen and swim suit, don't forget to bring your laptop computer or PDA.

HauteSpot Networks, a WLAN service provider who specializes in designing, installing and operating Wi-Fi Hot Spots for public wireless Internet access, just commissioned a new site at the Pismo Boardwalk Mall, at the heart of Pismo Beach. Using state of the art, standards compliant, radio networking equipment and design standards, HauteSpot Networks provides coverage over most of the beach front. Visitors to Pismo Beach can now surf the Web from anywhere on the beach, on the pier, along the seawall promenade, or from nearby hotels and restaurants.

"We are really excited about this opportunity, as it is pretty unique," said Bob Ehlers of HauteSpot Networks. "The owners of the Pismo Boardwalk Mall had a vision for technology in a place you wouldn't normally expect, and we are helping them fulfill that vision."

Customers on the beach and in surrounding areas can access the Internet using a wireless connection from their laptop computer or PDA. All the hardware they need is a wireless network adapter card (HauteSpot Networks sells long range 802.11a/b/g network adapter cards on their web site).

When a customer first establishes their wireless connection, they are presented with a welcome screen where they can enter their user account information. Customers can subscribe on an hourly, daily or monthly subscription basis and can pay through a variety of methods, including credit card or with prepaid cards available for sale at the Pismo Boardwalk Mall. Rates are $2.99 per hour, $5.99 per day, or $29.99 per month. Roaming users from other affiliate networks such as Boingo, GRIC and iPASS can also use the HauteSpot's Network.

"Now that we have the infrastructure installed, we will be working with local merchants on innovative services that leverage that infrastructure. Imagine being able to review a restaurant menu, pick out what you want on line, pay for it, and have it delivered to you, without ever having to leave your beach blanket," said Ehlers. "Or make dinner or tour reservations while enjoying the sunset from the end of Pismo Pier. Or even watch a streaming video movie while snuggling under a blanket on the beach at night. Anything is possible."

Wireless Internet analysts are predicting that the current $2 billion WI-FI industry will expand at a compounded growth rate of 30 percent to nearly a $6 billion industry. This would put WI-FI wireless Internet access on par with household name brands like Budweiser, and in line with growth in the mobile PC industry.
