Dayton, OH September 29, 2004 -- 114 talented handbell ringers from two continents will gather in Myrtle Beach, SC, October 7-10, 2004 at the unique performing event Distinctly Bronze. The musicians' efforts will culminate in a handbell concert on Sunday, October 10, 2004 at 4 p.m. in the Elliott White Springs Ballroom, Charles L. Reid Conference Center, Springmaid Beach Resort, 3200 S. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach, SC. A freewill offering will be accepted.
David Davidson, Dallas, TX, will rehearse the musicians and direct the performance on Sunday. Mr. Davidson was appointed director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus in 1994, and has prepared the Dallas Symphony Chorus for performances with Pinchas Zukerman, Eduardo Mata, Andrew Litton, Robert Shaw, and John Nelson, among others. He made his conducting debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 1996, stepping in at the last minute to conduct the final four Christmas Celebration Concerts when the conductor became ill. Since then he has conducted with acclaim the Dallas Symphony Christmas Celebration concerts and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1998 conducting the Texas Festival Chorus and the Inter School Orchestra in a performance of the Mozart Requiem. Mr. Davidson has conducted at numerous national handbell events, and directed at the International Handbell Symposium in Birmingham, England in 2000.
This is the sixth annual gathering for Distinctly Bronze, and the second to be held in Myrtle Beach. Musicians are chosen by an application process and all have extensive experience ringing. Many are professional musicians, serving as church organists, music ministers and choir directors. Others have various professions, but all share a love of ringing.
The program encompasses a variety of musical styles, including transcriptions of the symphonic works Bolero and Farandole, the folk song Shenandoah arranged for handbells and voice, holiday favorites, and original compositions.
